tabletop: the store opened in 2003, but tabletop: the story began in 2002.
here's what happened...
tabletop was not even a mere twinkle in the eyes and minds of three very accomplished individuals (actually, one individual and a husband/wife duo) in the autumn or winter of 2002 (it was a long time ago). we were in dupont circle, cold and probably hungry and in need of some fun shopping. and there was nothing. no retail oasis to quench our thirst for brightly colored, well designed and affordable home accessories slash gifts. so, we did what any resourceful and talented group of friends would do- we found thenearest bar and had some french onion soup.
this is what happened next...
after some time had passed...let's fast forward: business plan, found space, quit job (eek!), had some drinks, ate takeout, cried, worried, fought, ordered stuff, built store, painted store, opened boxes, drank some more...
tabletop opened the door (yes, just one) to its first customers in may 2003.hoorah!
*some of this may be fictional but some parts are true; and all of it is based on real life, some of which is ours and some, not so much.
